Dhanyashtakam Day 07/08 by Swami Aparajitananda, Chinmaya Mission Chicago-Yamunotri.

To emphasise the importance of silencing the mind, Swamiji begins even this talk by reminding us that the entire Dhanyāṣṭakam is essentially a commentary on the first line:
तज्ज्ञानं प्रशमकरं यदिन्द्रियाणां
(Tajjñānaṃ praśamakaraṃ yadindriyāṇāṃ)
"That knowledge which calms the senses."
Verse 8 of the Dhanyāṣṭakam elaborates the true nature of the world:
अज्ञानपङ्कपरिमग्नमपेतसारं
दुःखालयं मरणजन्मजरावसक्तम् ।
संसारबन्धनमनित्यमवेक्ष्य धन्या
ज्ञानासिना तदवशीर्य विनिश्चयन्ति ॥ ७॥
Swamiji discusses the concept of bondage in great detail, emphasising the need to understand how deeply we are entangled in worldly miseries. Without recognising our pitiable condition, we would lack the motivation to strive for liberation. The true nature of the world is:
1. अज्ञानपङ्कपरिमग्नम् (ajñānapaṅkaparimagnam) – Ignorance of the Self is like being stuck in a marsh. The more we struggle to escape without true knowledge, the deeper we sink. Living as the ego, unaware of our true nature, keeps us trapped.
2. अपेतसारं (apetasāraṃ) – Life lacks lasting essence. Even our most cherished moments fade over time, becoming insignificant.
3. दुःखालयं (duḥkhālayaṃ) – Life is an abode of sorrow. All experiences oscillate between joy and sorrow, but even fleeting joys eventually lead to pain.
4. मरणजन्मजरावसक्तम् (maraṇajanmajarāvasaktaṃ) – Birth, death, and old age are inescapable features of existence.
5. संसारबन्धनअनित्यम् (saṃsārabandhanamanityaṃ) – The bondage of samsara is impermanent, and it can be brought to an end.
The truly blessed (dhanyā) are those who recognize the causes of bondage and actively strive for liberation. With the sword of knowledge (jñānāsinā), they decisively cut down the tree of samsara. Such individuals, who understand the purpose of life and seek wisdom through the study of scriptures and association with the wise, are the real dhanyā.
The next verse delves into the importance of associating with wise individuals.
