In 1964, in towns like Jonesboro and Bogalusa, Louisiana, Black veterans formed the Deacons for Defense and Justice to protect their communities when local authorities refused to.

This is a chapter of Black history most textbooks barely touch.

We’re often told the Civil Rights Movement was purely nonviolent. But in reality, many nonviolent activists were protected by armed community members willing to defend their neighborhoods lawfully.

In this episode, we break down:

• Who the Deacons for Defense really were
• Why they organized
• How their presence reduced Klan violence
• And why the narrative around race, land, and power deserves a deeper look

We also address a common assumption — that these men were “Africans.” By 1964, the Atlantic slave trade had been banned for over 150 years, and the overwhelming majority of Black Louisianans were multi-generational American-born citizens. There is no documented evidence that the founders of the Deacons were African nationals or recent immigrants.

This conversation isn’t about denying history. It’s about demanding documentation and separating ancestry from nationality, and slogans from records.

The real question is this:

When the state failed to protect citizens, who stepped in?

History is more complex than we’re told — and it deserves more than simplified narratives.
