The Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is a magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Ram, the seventh avatar of Vishnu. The temple is being constructed on the site where Hindus believe Ram was born, and where a 16th-century mosque was demolished by Hindu activists in 1992. The temple’s construction is a culmination of a long-standing religious and political dispute that has shaped India’s history and identity.
The temple’s design and architecture reflect the ancient Nagara style of North Indian temple architecture, which features curvilinear towers (shikharas), a front hall (mandapa), a sanctum (garbhagriha), and intricate carvings. The temple is 161 feet tall, 235 feet wide, and spans 360 feet in length. It has five mandapas with five shikharas, supported by 300 pillars and adorned with 44 teak doors. The temple is made of bricks inscribed with Lord Ram’s name, Makrana marble, the same stone used in the Taj Mahal, and granite, sandstone, and marble from various parts of India. The temple does not use any iron or steel in its structure, as per the Nagara tradition, which ensures longevity and durability. The temple’s foundation comprises 47 layers of carefully engineered soil laid on excavated ground, reaching depths of 15 meters. The structure is also earthquake-resistant and can withstand natural calamities.
