The ARRL has announced that Icom America, a subsidiary of Japanese owned iCom, Inc will be the Official Sponsor of the 2026 ARRL “Year of the Club” initiative, which seeks to spotlight and strengthen amateur radio affiliated clubs through mentoring, community service, and resources. According to the ARRL, the sponsorship by iCom will help to reinforce the local foundation of amateur radio, where mentorship begins, technical skills are shared and public service takes root. And absolutely no ARRL members think that the sponsorship by iCom America is just an easy way to get advertising or force the ARRL into pushing more iCom products on its members.
During last month's historic blizzard that brought record snowfall, high winds, power outages, and coastal flooding to the Southeastern New England area, ARES and SKYWARN amateur radio operators activated emergency nets an incredible every 1 to 2 hours.
The amateur radio volunteers delivered over 1,000 real-time reports of conditions and damage to the National Weather Service, emergency managers, and local media, via repeaters and internet links, and some also supported local emergency operations centers when other systems failed. These brave heroes were even recognized by the Weather Channel for their heroic, courageous and potentially life saving efforts done from the comfort and safety of their basements.
and in related ham-radio hero news - During widespread power and phone outages in Cuba, a father-and-son amateur radio team resorted to using a neighbor’s motorcycle battery to power their radio to relay a doctor’s urgent call for an ambulance for a 6-year-old girl with a suspected case of appendicitis. Their urgent message reached emergency services through another operator, enabling care for the ailing 6 year old.
The state of Indiana has enacted a new law protecting ham radio operators from the scourge of power hungry antisocial Karens collectively known as.. an HOA. The bill, known as Indiana House Bill 1152 passed the Indiana State House with 81 yea's and 2 Nay's and expressly forbids a homeowners association from passing any rules that prohibit putting up an amateur radio antenna. The bill, signed into law on March 3rd by Governor Mike Braun, protects only residents of the state of Indiana and is not related to the bills currently being proposed in both the united states House and Senate. Those bills, if passed would eliminate HOAs from banning amateur radio antennas at a federal level.
