Predation and competition: A Great Blue Heron is hunting in a field in Santa Cruz California. It pauses, then jams its beak into the ground, pulling out a struggling gopher to eat. While the heron holds the gopher in its beak, a scream from a Red-tailed Hawk comes from above. The heron drops its gopher, and flies away squacking and defecating as the hawk swings in to steal the gopher.
