This feature in Microsoft 365 ensures that any external emails are clearly labeled, enhancing user security awareness. It's helpful if someone tries to impersonate emails or for attempted phishing emails.

Despite Microsoft introducing this feature three years ago for Exchange Online, many organizations remain unaware of it and have yet to enable it.

The only way to enable external tagging is with PowerShell, but it's easy to do.

The external tag will be visible in the below Outlook products:

- Outlook on the web
- Outlook for Windows
- Outlook mobile (iOS & Android)
- Outlook for Mac
