Oil Paint Transfer (with watercolour)
I recently had an inquiry about this technique, so thought it would make an interesting demo for others to try for themselves. Please note that the samples shown here are just illustrating the method and the end results should not be judged as finished artworks. I would advise anyone to check out the work of Paul Klee if you are not familiar with this artist. As you will see I am using a slightly thicker paper which is designed to work with oil paint, I also use watercolour so the paper needs to be able to handle a lot of water, 250gsm heavyweight mixedmedia paper is used. Frog masking tape is great for using with waterbased paints as it reacts to moisture and seals the edges, although it is not essential. The oil paint transfer paper is just ordinary photocopy paper. (any thin paper will work just as well)

Materials :
Photocopy paper (or any thin paper)
250gsm mixed media paper for use with oil-based paints
Ivory Black oil paint
Watercolour (various)
Frog masking tape.
Rag, pencil, cocktail stick.
Brushes and water.

Method :
To create the oil paint transfer sheet spread a thin layer of black oil paint onto the photocopy paper. I use a paper towel in the demo but you could use a brush, sponge, or soft rag. Do not apply too much paint or this will not work very well and the lines will be too heavy. Place the transfer sheet onto the heavyweight paper and then begin to trace out your composition using a pencil or cocktail stick applying various degrees of pressure to create heavy or light marks. Keep lifting the transfer sheet to check progress. Try a clean composition with simple shapes and lines and try not to overwork at this stage. You can leave this as a monochrome artwork or begin to add colour using watercolour paint. Use plenty of water and a large brush to completely cover the drawing (no need to let the oil paint dry) You will achieve some interesting blurred line effects using this method. Remove some of the paint with a paper towel and add a second colour if needed. This is a great technique to try and I hope you enjoy exploring the possibilities.

Use this method to transfer the artwork onto a canvas. Just draw out the composition on paper then on the reverse use the thin layer of oil paint. It's like a version of carbon copy paper.
