(25 Jan 2018) Students and faculty at Michigan State University described a melancholy mood on campus the day after Larry Nassar was given a lengthy prison sentence and the school's president resigned amid an outcry over its handling of allegations against the disgraced former sports doctor.
"The general mood right now on campus is that students are feeling somber," said Lorenzo Santavicca (SAN'-tuh-vih-kuh), , the student body president, "I think that for most folks that not only are we seeing a change in leadership at the institution occur in front of our eyes, but we're seeing the reputation of the institution at stake."
Not far away on campus, graduate student Hermance Akono (air-MONS' uh-KOH'-noh) organized an effort to write on "The Rock" the names of all 150-plus survivors of sexual abuse at the hands of Nassar.
"Me and a couple of other Social Work students thought it'd be a good idea to come paint The Rock and write the names of all the survivors that have come forth in the situation," Akono said. "We felt that it was important to let them know that the student body supports them, hears them and we think they're very courageous for coming forth."
Akono says she and the others came up with the idea on Wednesday, when Nassar, who worked at Michigan State as a doctor, received 40 to 175 years in prison for molesting young girls and women under the guise of medical treatment. Some were athletes at the school. Later in the day, Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon submitted her resignation.
Sue Carter, a Michigan State journalism professor, had been the faculty's athletic representative. It's a "deep and a dark stain on this university," she said.
Simon resigned on Wednesday saying she "could no longer be part of an administration that was not in full grasp of the damage done to the girls and women and to the institution itself." She was the representative to the NCAA and Big Ten since 2014.
"A lot of us care very deeply about this university," Carter said Thursday. "I came here as a student literally 50 years ago and have been also the parent of a student, a faculty member, an administrator and am very fortunate to be at a university I love that means a great deal to me and to teach literally thousands of students."
"So, a lot of us have felt very deeply wounded by what took place. And deep wounds take a while to heal. But they do eventually heal, and I'm looking forward to that day," Carter said.
