An "externality" is an effect of an industry whose costs are born by society, rather than by the company. Cancer is an externality of the tobacco industry. Climate change is an externality of the fossil fuel and animal agriculture industries. Water pollution is an externality of the fashion and agricultural industries. The corporations that make the most in profit usually have the greatest externalities.
