In this video, we share 3 tips on how to avoid common Craigslist scams. We have seen an increase in Craigslist scams and con artist activity over the past few months. One of the most common real estate scams on Craigslist is fake listings for sale or for lease. What a con artist will do is make a duplicate post of a vacant listing, re-list it for way below market value, and then rent it out to some unsuspecting tenant. We have seen people end up losing thousands of dollars by signing a fake lease with a fake landlord, moving into a property, only to have to move out within a very short period of time once the owners find out their vacant home has people living in it.

There are three tips we share in this video:

1. Beware of duplicate postings at differing prices or prices that appear too good to be true. If a posting looks too good to be true, it probably is! This age old adage remains true today. We have seen fake postings of rentals for hundreds of dollars below fair market rent in an attempt to get multiple applicants, charge them application fees, and then get them to move in and pay first months’ rent and security deposits.
2. Beware of landlords that are “live outside the area”, can’t talk to you on the phone, or meet you at the property. Con artists like to hide behind the anonymity of Craigslist.
3. Don’t ever wire funds! If a landlord is asking you to wire funds, that is a HUGE red flag. There is even a warning on the bottom of Craigslist’s websites saying don’t send funds via wire. Funds that are wired are not traceable and cannot be retrieved. If you send the money it leaves your bank account immediately and goes off to the con artists bank account.

Please be warned! Craigslist con artists are out there. They are tricking people every day into these same type of scams. We are passionate about educating and warning people about these scams so that they don’t ever have to fall prey to a situation like this. We’ve seen it happen before, and it was not good for anybody involved.
