আমাদের ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশ কিংবা বাংলা ও বাঙালির সংস্কৃতিতে খ্রিস্টান ধর্ম ও সংস্কৃতির প্রভাব রয়েছে বহুল পরিমাণে। কেক কেটে জন্মদিন পালনের রীতি থেকে আমাদের খাদ্যতালিকায় পেস্ট্রি, পিৎজা, বার্গারের ঢুকে পড়া বা আমাদের পোশাক-পরিচ্ছদ থেকে আজকের প্রি-ওয়েডিং -এই সব কিছুই খ্রিস্টান সংস্কৃতির প্রভাব।
আপাত ভাবে মনে করা হয় ঔপনিবেশিক যুগেই তার সূচনা ইংরেজ-ফরাসিদের হাত ধরে। আমাদের বাংলায় ষোড়শ শতক থেকে খ্রিস্টান ধর্মপ্রচার শুরু হলেও ভারতে খ্রিস্ট ধর্মের সূচনা হয়েছে প্রায় দুই হাজার বছর আগে। যিশু খ্রিস্টকে ক্রুশবিদ্ধ করার পর তাঁর শিষ্যদের একজন সেন্ট থমাস ধর্মপ্রচারের উদ্দেশ্যে এসে পৌঁছন দক্ষিণ ভারতের কেরালায়। মোটামুটি ৫২ খ্রিস্টাব্দ থেকেই কেরালায় তৈরি হয় সেন্ট থমাসের অনুগত খ্রিস্টানসমাজ। যদিও বাংলায় খ্রিস্টধর্মের প্রসার খ্রিস্টান মিশনারিদের হাত ধরে পর্তুগীজদের পৃষ্ঠপোষকতায়। পরে কলকাতায় ব্রিটিশদের উদ্যোগে তা গতি পায়।
বাংলার আদিবাসীদের ধর্মান্তরিতকরণ, বাংলার নবজাগরণের যুগে ইংরেজি শিক্ষার প্রসার, মিশনারি স্কুল-কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠা, ইংরেজি শিক্ষিত কিছু প্রগতিশীল মানুষের খ্রিষ্টান ধর্ম গ্রহণ, ইংরেজদের অনুকরণ -ইত্যাদি সূত্র ধরেই বাংলায় খ্রিস্ট ধর্ম ও সংস্কৃতি প্রসার লাভ করে। আজ রইল সেই গল্প।

The influence of Christianity and Christian culture on the Indian subcontinent, particularly in Bengal and among Bengalis, has been substantial. This influence can be seen in various aspects of our culture, from the tradition of cutting cakes to celebrate birthdays to the inclusion of pastries, pizzas, and burgers in our diet. It has also affected our clothing and the pre-wedding customs of today. While it is generally believed that this influence began during the colonial era with the English and French, the spread of Christianity in Bengal has its roots in much earlier times.

Christianity was introduced to India nearly two thousand years ago, following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. One of his disciples, Saint Thomas, arrived in Kerala, South India, for the purpose of spreading Christianity. Around 52 AD, a Christian community devoted to Saint Thomas began to form in Kerala. However, the expansion of Christianity in Bengal was largely due to the efforts of Christian missionaries under the patronage of the Portuguese. Later, this expansion gained momentum under the British in Kolkata.

The conversion of the indigenous people of Bengal, the spread of English education during the Bengali Renaissance, the establishment of missionary schools and colleges, the adoption of Christianity by some progressive English-educated individuals, and the emulation of the English - all these factors contributed to the spread of Christianity and its culture in Bengal. This is the story that remains with us today.
