Whether you have a regular or frost free hose bib (outdoor faucet), you will need to winterize them to prevent burst pipes or leaks. Colin, a plumber at Best Plumbing, serving King, Snohomish and Pierce counties shows us how easy it is to winterize your hose bib.

The best time to winterize outdoor faucets is in October - if it's January though and you haven't winterized your faucets, do it as soon as you can.

Hi my name is Colin, I'm with Best Plumbing. We are based out of Western Washington. Today we are going to talk about how to winterize your hose bibs. It's important to winterize your exterior faucet or hose bib because if you don't you will cause a rupture in your pipe and possible damage. A good time to winterize your exterior faucet or hose bib in Western Washington would be October. But if it's December and you haven't winterized it yet, you better get it done. How to winterize your exterior faucet or hose bib is fairly simple. If it is a frost free hose bib you simply need to unscrew the hose and let it drain down. You see these installed in modern homes. What happens is when you shut this off the water shuts off back here. This being the front of the faucet, this is next to your siding. So you can picture this when this shuts off this is back where it's warm inside your house. You're not going to ever get freezing conditions back here. So what's important on this is that you get the water out of this copper tube. When you shut this off if you leave the hose on that leaves water in here and then it's susceptible to freezing and if it freezes it'll burst this copper and then the next time you go to wash your car in the springtime you're going to turn this thing on and water is going to come shooting out of this back here instead of out up here and you're going to see water behind your house you might see your drywall gets wet. Here we have a hose that is in the off position but the hose has not been removed. This is a frost free hose bib, when I take this off you're going to get water out of it. That water right there is typical, that's just draining out. It should stop dripping and that's all you have to do now. So there is no water left in that to freeze. If it's not a frost free hose bib, you need to put a foam dome, maybe wrap it with a sock underneath the foam dome and that'd be it. So it's time to call a plumber if you do not have a frost free hose bib and you wish to have one installed so you have less maintenance, you basically just need to unscrew the hose and you're done. Or if you have a frost free hose bib and you waited too long and it froze now it's time to call a plumber and we'll get that changed out for you.
