STORYLINE:
An Israeli strike on the city of Rafah on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip killed seven people, including children, hospital officials said Friday.

The overnight strike on the home of Chahine family killed two adults and five boys and girls whose ages ranged between 7 and 16, according to a list of the names released by Abu Youssef al-Najar Hospital in the city.

The strike came a day after the militant Palestinian group Hamas said it was sending a delegation to Egypt for further cease-fire talks, in a new sign of progress in attempts by international mediators to hammer out an agreement between Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza.

Israel has regularly carried out airstrikes on Rafah since the start of the war seven months ago and has threatened to send in ground troops, saying Rafah is the last major Hamas stronghold in the coastal enclave.

Over a million Palestinians have sought refuge in the city on the Egyptian border.

The United States and others have urged Israel not to invade, fearing a humanitarian catastrophe.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged Tuesday to launch an incursion into Rafah.

In its Oct. 7 raid in southern Israel, Hamas killed 1,200 people and took some 250 people captive.

About 100 were freed in a November truce and Hamas and other militant groups still hold 100, as well as the remains of 30 more, according to Israeli authorities.

Israel’s assault in Gaza has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians and left more than 77,000 injured, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

More than 80% of the population has been driven from their homes and almost the entire population is dependent on outside aid for food, raising fears of famine in hardest-hit northern Gaza.
