The United States Supreme Court has delivered a significant blow to President Donald Trump’s economic agenda, ruling 6-3 that his use of emergency authority to impose sweeping tariffs was illegal. The court held that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not grant the president unilateral power to levy duties during peacetime. President Trump may now look to the Trade Expansion Act or seek legislative support from the Senate, where Senator Lindsey Graham is reportedly championing a bill with 80 co-sponsors to formalise the tariff powers. For now, the ruling suggests a return to pre-April tariff rates, though the White House is currently huddling to determine its next legal and executive steps.
