Commissioner Margaret Gomez: "Del Valle has pretty much been an independent school district and they take care of their issues. There have been times when I know we have had some extra money to help with implementing a program to help with catching the mental issues the mental health issues in children and in talking to the superintendent there, we offered them, I offered them money. I said you don't have, it won't cost you anything and he basically said no thank you. So, we just brought that money into use in another school in precinct four, but in the city, so that would be AISD."
The significance:
• Most schools are Independent School Districts. (listen to the way she says independent)
• She has not offered money to DVISD since before June of 2011 when (female) Superintendent Dr. Kelly Crook was appointed.
• If DVISD were offered money that did not cost the district anything; it does not make sense that it would be declined since so many low income families are served by the district.
• Lastly, there are 17 independent school districts within Travis County; not only AISD.
