The Missouri Department of Conservation wants to help you to discover nature and learn more about the Topeka shiner.
The state and federally endangered native minnow has declined in numbers most likely due to environmental pollution and loss of habitat.

Since 2013, the Department of Conservation has raised and released Topeka shiners in central and northern Missouri, including over 9,000 released in the spring creek watershed located within Union Ridge Conservation Area.

The spring creek watershed has very high quality water and that’s why we feel the Topeka shiners will do well in our restoration efforts.
We will monitor them to make sure they are taking off in the streams that we put them in and also our hope is that they will move to other headwater streams and colonize those and help recover the population.

Topeka shiners are considered non-essential, experimental population.
There are no restrictions or regulations that affect property owners in areas where they are released.

Topeka shiners are part of Missouri’s natural heritage, and through the efforts of the conservation department and the cooperation of private landowners, this small minnow will hopefully be part of the landscape once again.
