How to follow word limits in the UPSC Mains exam: Shabd seema (word limit) is an important aspect in answer writing at the Mains exam of UPSC or PSCs or any other exam such as IGNOU or university entrance tests. Dr. Vikas Divyakirti says that in the mains exam it could be like a warning (adhiktam shabd seema, max word limit) or as an indicative measure (example- essay should be between 1000 to 1200 words in the UPSC Mains exam). UPSC aspirants (students) are worried how they should follow the word limit in the questions.See this video lecture related to this topic and understand what the UPSC and examiners may be wanting from you in the examination answer sheet.

Dr. Vikas bases this video on the questions that arise in the students minds about word limit in exam hall
(a) Are the words counted in the exam (UPSC has some system where it actually counts the words in the answers written by the candidate in the Mains exam in the answer sheet)? If yes, how?
(b) If they are counted, then what are the words which are included in the answer word limit counting? Are all words included or some words like prepositions (ka, ki, se, aur, and, to etc.) are excluded?
(c) What is the penalty (or consequence) for violation of word limit in UPSC mains exam (if one has written less or more than the word limit specified by the UPSC)?
(d) What should be students’ strategy with respect to word limit demand by the UPSC at the Mains exam(s)?

The video goes in details about the answers to all these questions. This Hindi video lecture will prove very useful for students preparing for UPSC civil services exam, state service exams. Dr. Vikas says that it is a laughable proposition that UPSC is counting each word written by the candidate in the IAS (mains) exam. One candidate writes about 25000 words in all of the papers of the UPSC Mains exam and the total number of Mains exam candidates are about 15000 (current trend); so the final words that UPSC will have to count at Mains exam will be 37.5 crores! One thing should be very clear to students: nobody in UPSC is counting words (like 1,2,3, ….) ; at most it could be a rough measure.
The exam question sheet has anyway space for answer writing now and it is seen that student use the whole space for answer writing in mains paper if they are comfortable with the question. If needed, examiners will count your words by estimating words in one line and accordingly extrapolating.Candidates should be comfortable with even taking some liberties with respect to answer writing word limits if needed, as ultimately quality of answer matters if you have kept the word limit parameter broadly (not exactly) in mind.
