It's been months of anticipation, rumors, and waiting to see if it ever actually gets released, and today, I finally received the infamous and elusive E6 Handheld Gaming Device for purpose of review.
This Android based handheld is powered by the widely used RK3326 chip and is capable of running most systems up to N64 & PSP, where from there on out game performance will vary.
The console feels very comfortable in the hands and has a nice 5" IPS screen.
I love the green color of the device that was sent to me. The circle dpad is a bit unusual and works decently well for most games but does suffer from the dreaded false diagonals. I hope it's something that can be remedied with the dpad "tape fix," so I'll test that in the future.
The game lists are large and plenty. However, many of the lists are out of order, and there are a lot of duplicates with multiple regions. I would recommend adding your own clean rom lists, although there is a search feature to help you find a specific game if you can't find it browsing the jumbled game lists.
There is a button mapping tool embedded within the UI which is accessible from within a game by pressing the "M' button under the dpad, and although it looks to be very straightforward, I had a hard time with it. I have yet to successfully map my buttons to how I like for N64 and MAME. After this video was filmed, I was able to successfully map PSP and will provide updates for mapping N64 and MAME as I figure it out. There's either something I can't wrap my head around, or maybe it needs a firmware update because it seems N64 and PSP read the inputs differently? I really hope the mapping tool can be made to work well, or if it already does, I figure it out soon, or somebody please help explain the proper setup for these systems to me. The same "M" button also brings up options for up to 10 save/load states.
The face buttons and dpad are using a traditional silicone membrane, and they feel okay. The shoulder buttons use a quiet mechanical switch and feel very nice. I can tell the face buttons are all connected and are unfortunately not 4 separate buttons, but I think this can also be remedied.
The thumbsticks are similar to that of what you'd see in a JoyCon, however my left stick looks like one from something from an Anbernic device and my right one looks like a JoyCon thumbstick, with the 4 cardinal notches. I'm not sure why they don't match, but I would've preferred they did.
The screen is a 5" 16:9 IPS display and looks great. Unfortunately, none of the games are scaled correctly except PSP. Even GameBoy and GameBoy Color are a forced 16:9 aspect ratio. I really hope they can add aspect ratio scaling options because it's just not pleasant to play that way. There is also a bilinear filter that seems to be applied, softening the pixels, which I am not a fan of. I want my chunky retro pixels. There doesn't seem to be a way to turn this off either. Again, I hope they can provide an option to turn off smoothing, but we'll just have to wait and see.
I don't know what the dev community is capable of doing to make the changes needed for this to be a great RK3326 device, but if they can be made I think it can be an awesome device!
Fix smoothing and provide proper scaling and everything up to, and including PS1 would be a joy to play on this device. PSP and N64 are a bonus because not all the games work but some of the most fun, like Mario Kart 64, do.
I really hope the minor changes necessary to make this a much loved device can be implemented, either by the manufacturers or the modding/dev community, because I love the way it looks and feels. It's solid!
