Facing My Fear: My First 150-Meter Waterfall Rappelling Experience
For the longest time, I’ve had a fear of slopes. The mere idea of standing on an incline made me nervous, let alone the thought of walking down one, suspended by ropes, with a roaring waterfall at my back.
But something inside me whispered—it’s time.
Waterfall rappelling had been on my bucket list for a while. So, when the opportunity came, I signed up. Little did I know this one experience would teach me so much about fear, resilience, and the power of inner motivation.
The Journey Begins
The excitement began the moment we left the city behind and entered a peaceful village surrounded by hills and greenery. The energy was high, hearts were light, and spirits were soaring. But that changed quickly as the real adventure began.
Early morning, we started a trek to reach the rappelling point. That climb tested me in unexpected ways. Each step toward the top triggered that old fear again—what if I fall, what if I freeze midway, what if I can’t do this?
But with every “what if,” I answered myself: Just one step more, Aarti.
Preparing for the Descent
At the top, we were briefed. The instructors started tying ropes around sturdy trees, securing locks, creating knots—it all looked very real now. One rope was dropped down to the base, where someone would monitor us during the descent.
And then came the spiritual start—like any true Indian adventure—with a coconut broken for blessings and loud chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya!” That moment gave me courage, even though fear still tugged at me.
One by one, people started going down. Watching them made my fear grow, not shrink. It looked terrifying—only two ropes, slippery rocks, the constant thundering water. And then, my name was called.
The Leap of Faith
I put on my helmet and harness, and with a firm but nervous voice, told the trainer, “Please tighten everything properly—I’m scared but I want to do this right.”
With all my strength, I whispered to myself:
“All is well, Aarti. You will do it. You are stronger than you think.”
As I took my first step downward, I could still hear people cheering:
“You got this, Aarti! Ganpati Bappa Morya! Har Har Mahadev!”
But soon, the roaring waterfall drowned out all voices. All that remained was me and my heartbeat.
I focused on every single step—pulling the rope, locking my grip, positioning my legs carefully. At one point, I slipped. My feet lost the mountain. I was hanging in mid-air, trying to stabilize myself. I couldn’t find support. My direction changed because of the waterfall’s force, but somehow I managed to regain control, rotate back, and continue downward.
Midway, I thought I had reached the bottom—only to find I had covered just half the distance.
But I didn’t stop.
One step at a time, I moved through the curve, back onto the slope, water crashing down on me. I was soaked, tired, overwhelmed—but determined.
The Moment That Changed Everything
When my feet finally touched the base, I let out the deepest breath I didn’t even know I was holding.
I DID IT.
That moment wasn’t just a physical release—it was emotional. My heart was overflowing with joy, relief, and pride.
What I Learned
This experience wasn’t just about adventure or crossing off a bucket list item. It was about proving to myself that I could face what scared me most. No one else could’ve taken that step for me. The cheering helped, but the real push came from inside.
💡 Your own motivation is the most beautiful energy you can build.
People will be there to support, encourage, guide—but the real journey is yours alone.
And when you reach the end, don’t wait for others to applaud—tap your own back first.
You’ve earned it.
I’m proud of myself for doing this.
And to anyone out there, holding back because of fear—I see you. Take that step. You never know how brave you already are until you try.
