A small plane trying to make an emergency landing on a Minnesota highway crashed into a car early Tuesday.

The small plane, flown by David Gowan of Minot, South Dakota took off from Hawley Municipal Airport in Minnesota and picked up a passenger and refueled before flying towards Minot.

The plane’s engines cut off mid-flight while the plane was flying at approximately 1,000 feet. The pilot and passenger decided to make an emergency landing on Minnesota’s Highway 10.

While landing, the 1979 single-engine Mooney caught up with a Ford Fusion driving in the same direction. Although the driver of the vehicle tried to move to the side of the road and avoid a collision, the plane’s propellers still struck the side of the car.

Damage to the aircraft was minimal and the pilot as well as his passenger were unscathed. The driver of the car also escaped injury. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the engine failure.
