The alarming number of successful coups and attempted military takeovers in several African countries in 2021 and 2022 indicates the erosion of democracy on the continent. Exacerbating this volatile situation are attempts by African leaders, such as Faustin-Archange Touadera of the Central African Republic and Macky Sall of Senegal, to extend their time in office time by manipulating term limits. From 2000 to 2018, 47 attempted changes to presidential term limits were recorded in 28 African countries. While the African Union discussed the persistent challenge of unconstitutional changes of government at its 2023 summit, it raises questions about the body’s ability to effectively address the issue and uphold democratic values and principles in Africa.  Dr Craig Moffat at Good Governance Africa believes that the AU's bureaucratic system works slowly, but that the organisation plays a vital role in finding solutions for the continent's problems.
