Описание к видео Paul Bakker | People of Harley Street Health District

Meet the curator of one of the world’s most iconic medical districts.
In our second episode of People of Harley Street Health District, we talk with Paul Bakker, Head of Healthcare Asset Management at The Howard de Walden Estate.

The Howard de Walden Estate is the majority owner of the Marylebone area of London, overseeing a community of major healthcare providers, retailers, and many other residents. It owns and manages the buildings across the Harley Street Health District and is responsible for maintaining, leasing and developing the medical properties used by clinicians, hospitals and research organisations. Howard de Walden sets the strategic direction for how the District grows, operates and collaborates.

Paul is an integral part of the strategy to maintain excellence in clinical properties, support world-class healthcare providers, and strengthen the links between private healthcare, research institutions and commercial partners. He works to grow the District as a centre for medical excellence, innovation and real-world impact, whilst protecting the character of the area.

A statue of Joseph Lister stands on Portland Place, close to Regent’s Park and a short walk from Harley Street. It was installed in 1924 and marks his contribution to modern surgery and his connection to medical practice in London.
Joseph Lister (1827–1912) was a British surgeon known as the “father of antiseptic surgery.” He developed carbolic acid (phenol) techniques to sterilise wounds, surgical instruments and operating theatres. His methods dramatically reduced surgical infection and mortality rates. Lister worked at University College Hospital, King’s College Hospital and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

This episode explores Howard de Walden's work, the history of the District, and the figures who shaped it. It provides direct insight into how the Harley Street Health District operates today and how its future is being planned.
