Dorothea Dix was a pioneering American reformer, born in 1802 in Hampden, Maine. As a young woman, she worked as a teacher and writer, but her life changed dramatically when she visited a Massachusetts jail in the 1840s and was shocked by the inhumane treatment of the mentally ill. This experience launched her lifelong crusade to improve conditions in asylums and prisons. Dix tirelessly traveled across the U.S. and Europe, advocating for the mentally ill and successfully lobbying for the creation of over 30 mental health institutions. During the Civil War, she served as Superintendent of Army Nurses for the Union, organizing care for wounded soldiers. Dorothea Dix dedicated her life to compassion, reform, and human dignity.
