The Bloods recent run of victories came to a crashing halt, as they fell at the first hurdle in the NWCFL Macron Cup against a spirited Maine Road.
In what was always going to be a close game, based on current league positions (Droylsden 1st / Maine Road 4th at time of writing), it was the away side who settled into the game the quickest, forcing Jordan Latham into a couple of early saves.
On the quarter hour mark, and before the Bloods to really get into the game, the visitors took the lead, when a deep free kick into the box found Ben Mooney's head, and he excellently directed his header past Latham to give Maine Road the lead.
The home side finally started to string a few passes together, and looked dangerous down their right hand side through Yasir Salim, but the Bloods couldn't find the breakthrough, as they went into the break 1-0 down.
The second half followed the pattern of the first in all honesty, with the visitors getting players behind the ball, and not allowing the home side a route through, and actually doubled their lead in the 55th minute.
A strong challenge on Salim by Road midfielder Mark Pearson, resulted in the ball falling to defender Lee Gavin, who's through ball should have been easily dealt with, but a horrendous mix up between Latham and Harry Shipton left Maine Road Jean-Jacques Kirongozi with an empty goal to double the visitor's lead.
With time running out, the Bloods threw caution to the wind, and started to dominate the game, with a number of chances falling to the home side, but it wasn't until the 78th minute until they got on the scoresheet.
Emmanuel Omorogbe picked up the ball in midfield, played the ball to Substitute Alik Babayan, and continued his run. Babayan played it to Kyle Campbell on the edge of the box, who played in the marauding Omorogbe, who flicked the ball between Maine Road Captain Jake Pogson's legs, and smashed the ball past Alfie Brindley-Smith in the visitor's goal.
Further chances fell to Sam Oliver, Jamie Robinson, Nellson Van, and Kyle Campbell, but none of them could get the ball over the line, as time ran out, and Maine Road progressed in the Macron Cup, thanks to a well deserved 2-1 win.
Next up for the Bloods, is a trip to the seaside, and a League game against Thornton Cleveleys, whilst Maine Road entertain Bacup borough at Brantingham Road.
