A very ancient town continuously inhabited since 1600 BC It was a flourishing town as it was on an important trade route called the dakhsina path connecting north & south India .

Ahilyabai Holkar was Born in 1725, in village Chondi, in Maharashtra. When she was eight, Malhar Rao Holkar who was a commander of Peshwa Bajirao spotted her in a temple in chondi & so impressed was he by her character that he chose her to marry his son Khande Rao. When she was eight, she thus accidentally walked on the stage of history and made it eventful .
