The 2024 Tesla Model Y enters its fifth model year with no major changes, but this electric crossover SUV continues to impress with its driving range, performance, and affordability.

Based on the Model 3 sedan, the Model Y trades some of that car's nimble handling for increased practicality. Cargo space is generous, and the optional third row, while very tight, allows seating for up to 7. Dual-motor all-wheel drive models can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a sports car-like 3.5 seconds in Performance trim. Even the Long Range hits 60 in just 4.4 seconds. Handling is less sharp than the Model 3 however, with the higher center of gravity resulting in more body roll in corners. Ride quality is also firmer.

Range remains a standout feature. The rear-wheel drive Standard Range model promises up to 260 miles from its 75 kWh battery pack. But far more compelling are the dual-motor Long Range and Performance versions. The Long Range nets an EPA estimated 330 miles, while the Performance model officially goes 285 miles between charges. Real world highway range in our testing exceeded 200 miles for both versions. DC fast charging replenishes 180 miles in just 15 minutes.

The minimalist interior relies heavily on the large central touchscreen display. Controls for climate, media, navigation and more are all accessed here. Build quality trails European and Japanese rivals, with uneven panel gaps and cheap feeling materials in areas. There’s ample passenger space though, with a light and airy feel enhanced by the glass roof. Seating is comfortable if lacking in adjustability. The optional third row is very tight, making it unsuitable for regular adult use. Cargo capacity is generous, aided by the deep front trunk.

Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and active lane control. Autopilot, which can control steering, braking and speed under certain conditions, comes standard as well. Despite the name it still requires driver supervision and should not be treated as fully autonomous.

Pricing starts at $53,490 for the rear-drive Standard Range, with the Long Range opening at $59,990. At the top of the lineup is the $64,990 Performance. With no significant direct competitors when it debuted in 2019, the Model Y now faces stiff competition from the likes of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

Still, there’s a lot to like in this mainstream EV. The Tesla Model Y offers range, performance and value that are hard to beat. Rough edges remain, but overall it’s easy to see why the Model Y has become Tesla’s most popular model. For buyers wanting an affordable, long-range electric crossover, the Model Y remains a top pick.
