Описание к видео Large 140 y/o Port Jackson Fig Gets New Home (Long Version)

This large Port Jackson Fig (Ficus rubiginosa) is over 140 years old and is a significant landscape feature in the Wynnum landscape (East Brisbane). The tree needed to be preserved and moved due to extensive development, and so was relocated approximately 180 metres from one side of the project site to the other.

With a canopy spread of 30+ metres and height of 19 metres high, moving the tree would be no small job for the Treescape team. Four months of planning went in to preparing the tree for the relocation by a team of arborists, plant health care technicians, and agronomists. All worked with the tree over the lead up to the move, to ensure its health was optimised for the relocation and that its long term survivability was assured.

The extreme size and dimensions of the tree meant that lifting it was not an option. Because of this, Treescape needed to install a sled-based system under the tree to slide it into position. The drag operation of this transplant was undertaken in two main parts.
1. First drag from original position to 160 metres away to start of main turning point. This operation required one D9, two D6 bulldozers, and four heavy haulage tow trucks with two massive winches on each truck. Each winch truck had a pull capacity of 120 ton.
2. The second and final drag took the tree from the stage one stop point to 20 metres outside the proposed construction envelope of the project. This part of the project required using all five of Queensland’s heavy haulage recovery trucks to pull the tree the final few meters. To achieve this move, the road needed to be shut down so the trucks could park in the middle of the street.

The tree featured in this video has a weight of approximately 286 ton, and needed a fleet of heavy vehicles to move it. A massive 6700 cubic meters of soil was moved to create the tree relocation pathway.

This transplanting operation was managed and overseen by, Daniel Oaten, Chief Arborist based at Treescape’s Wacol support office. The trees’ condition is looking fantastic since the move, with no leaf drop or visible signs of stress. Daniel and his team will be looking after the tree for a further two years to ensure its health continues.
