The Kulshan Carbon Trust is a non-profit that is on a mission to conserve and sequester carbon through collaborative natural climate solutions in Northwest Washington. Natural climate solutions use existing environmental processes to address climate change. This includes projects like tree planting, regenerative agriculture practices, and biochar production.

To bring these solutions to our region, KCT works with landholders to implement natural climate solution projects suited for their land by connecting them with local resources, expert knowledge, technical assistance, and on-the-ground support. Throughout the implementation process, the KCT team works to scientifically measure and calculate the amount of carbon dioxide each project keeps out of the atmosphere, which is certified and turned into carbon credits. These carbon credits can be bought by businesses, organizations, and local governments to meet their climate goals, and that money goes back to the landholder and other project partners to reward and incentivize their involvement in natural climate solutions.

KCT is continuing to scale its biochar projects in the region after its successful pilot project in 2022 and is also exploring other natural climate solution pilot projects. In future years, organizations will have the opportunity to support specific local carbon sequestration project(s) through the KCT, visit project sites, and help on-the-ground if interested. KCT hopes to build lasting relationships with local organizations to build a collaborative regional community focused on carbon sequestration and associated environmental, social, and economic co-benefits.
