Have you ever wondered how a nation secures its borders and projects power on the global stage? For decades, India, a rising superpower, was heavily reliant on other countries for its military hardware. The 1999 Kargil War served as a stark wake-up call. As our brave soldiers fought in the treacherous Himalayan heights, the nation faced a critical shortage of essential weapons and spare parts. Even our Bofors guns were at risk. This dependence on foreign nations, some of whom were not allies, was a significant vulnerability. Fast forward to today, and the tables have turned dramatically. India is not only becoming self-reliant but is also emerging as a major exporter of defence equipment.
This incredible transformation is a story of strategic vision and determined execution. For years following independence, India's defence production was limited to basic equipment manufactured in ordnance factories established by the British. The 1962 war exposed the inadequacy of our outdated weaponry against modern forces. While steps were taken to establish a domestic production base through Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), progress was hampered by a lack of competition, bureaucratic hurdles, and insufficient R&D funding. Consequently, our import dependency soared, and by 2010, India held the undesirable title of the world's largest arms importer.
The real shift began post-2014 with the launch of the 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. The government introduced a revolutionary new defence procurement policy prioritising indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured products. A game-changing 'Positive Indigenisation List' was introduced, banning the import of hundreds of items and compelling the domestic industry to innovate. To fuel this ambition, foreign direct investment (FDI) rules were liberalised, attracting not just capital but also crucial technology and expertise.
The results have been nothing short of spectacular. In the last decade, India's defence production has skyrocketed by over 200%, and our defence exports have grown an astounding 34 times, reaching over 100 countries. We've moved from being 65% import-dependent to 65% self-reliant. This new era has seen the development of advanced weapon systems like the 'Tejas' Light Combat Aircraft, the 'Arjun' Main Battle Tank, the 'Akash' surface-to-air missile system, and the crowning achievement – India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.
A key driver of this success is the vibrant participation of the private sector and innovative startups. Through initiatives like 'Innovations for Defence Excellence' (iDEX), startups are being empowered with grants to solve critical challenges for our armed forces. Companies like Big Bang Boom Solutions, with its anti-drone systems, and QNu Labs, pioneering quantum communication, are testaments to this thriving ecosystem.
