Fashion Shoot with Canon RF 15-35mm | Inside Fashion and Beauty Photography with Lindsay Adler

A wide-angle lens is certainly not a ‘typical’ choice for a fashion editorial. Usually, when I go on location I opt for my fast primes, I include the Canon RF 50mm 1.2 or a flexible zoom like the Canon RF 24-70mm 2.8. In this shoot, however, I challenge myself to step outside the norms and shoot an entire fashion shoot at 15mm!

For these images, I grabbed the Canon RF 15-35mm 2.8mm paired with my Canon R5. I posed my model around a couple block radius of Washington Square Park in NYC to create several impactful scenes at 15mm!

Let’s chat a bit about the challenges, benefits, and suggestions for shooting with a wide-angle lens for fashion!

Challenges of wide angle:
- Background elements are not eliminated with a narrow depth of field. In other words, you must be very aware of your composition and background elements.
- In a busy area (like NYC) it will be a challenge to find spaces with minimal visual distractions behind the subject. You’ll have to be patient to wait for all the elements to come together.
- With a view field of view, you still want to have an emphasis on your subject so they aren’t ‘lost’ in the frame. This can be done with light, composition, and distance to the camera.
- While you can add artificial lighting to a shot, it will often be a challenge to avoid it being in your frame.

Benefits of wide angle:
- A wide-angle lens is atypical for fashion and will allow you to do something out of the ordinary. This is often desirable in a world filled with many photos that often look alike!
- The exaggerated perspective of 15mm can allow for creative results like emphasizing a subject’s height or the fullness of a dress.
- The wide field of view can allow for dramatic scenes and angles. For example, this is a great way to include skyscrapers, tall buildings, moments, or even just a dramatic scene when the camera is placed on the ground for a dramatically low perspective.

Tips for wide angle:
- Look for a 1-point or even a 2-point perspective. Analyze your scene for converging lines of a city street (1-point) or the edge of a building (2-point) that will then serve to exaggerate the lines in the scene.
- Simplify your backgrounds. Pay attention to your composition more than ever. You won’t be using a narrow depth of field to blur out the scene, so you’ll need to pay attention to everything. Try shooting up from a low angle against a sky or building. Seek out locations (a field, forest, etc) with limited visual distractions. Also, consider going to a location where the entire scene is visually compelling. For example, a fairground with dramatic background elements could be a great use of wide-angle to include a scene.
- Get low. Try a low perspective when struggling with composition.
- Whatever is closest to the camera will look larger in the scene, and you can use this to creative effect. For example, getting low with a subject in a dress can make the dress look fuller and more dramatic. Having a shoe/heel close to the camera can uniquely make this the center of interest in the frame.
- If you are shooting ‘wide but close’ in your composition (aka wide focal length but close to your subject), you can reduce your distortion by having the subject more centered in the frame. The closer the area to the edges, the more you will see the wide-angle effect.
