From PASIC 2019's After Hours Jam where, thanks to Eric C. Hughes, I was invited to perform with stellar saxophonist Rob Dixon & his fabulous band. I chose this classic tune by Joe Henderson as my showcase because I enjoy the openness in improvisation it allows for & dig the challenge of building the momentum rhythmically through each cycle of the form by adhering to the tension & release of both the melody & the chord changes. I’ve been very inspired by classic recordings of the tune featuring Al Foster & Jack DeJohnette, as well as the general approach to jazz waltz drumming by Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins, Max Roach & Tony Williams. 3/4 is a fascinating landscape to me because you can go any direction inside it - 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, even 16 can all work & are heard here. The trick is to enhance the vibe of the tune & not overwhelm it. There was no rehearsal for this. I met the band a minute before we performed & it was a great pleasure to play with such sensitive & intuitive musicians!
