Do you always need to get surgery for a torn meniscus?

JJ McCarthy will miss the entire 2024 NFL season after surgeons found more damage in his knee than they were hoping to see, so they had to perform a full meniscus repair as opposed to a less serious surgery like a partial meniscectomy would have been.

A torn meniscus is one of the most common leg injuries in the world and the surgeries that go along with them are one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the orthopedic world. However, the narrative around the necessity for surgical repairs of a torn meniscus is luckily changing as more and more research is supporting the fact that the outcomes for NON-SURGICAL treatment are EQUAL to SURGICAL treatment for partial meniscectomies.
As always, every case is different. Some people will respond great to conservative care while others will respond better to surgery. What I’m trying to teach you is that you have OPTIONS. You don’t have to default to surgery if you have a meniscus tear, you can (and should) give conservative care a fair ahot@before electing to go for surgery.
