BRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) -- A northern Kentucky sheriff and his chief deputy got high recognition at the Kentucky Sheriff's Association Convention.

There are 120 sheriffs in the state of Kentucky. Bracken County sheriff Howard Niemeier was awarded sheriff of the year and chief deputy Bob Scott was awarded deputy of the year. The organization recognized both for positive changes in training and investigations as well as the county's new school drug program.

The program starts in kindergarten and teaches children about the devastating effects of drugs using speakers from the community including recovering heroin addicts. Several other sheriffs at the convention became interested in the program called "Salute." It stands for "Students And Law Enforcement United Through Education."

The sheriff said he'll make the program and a workbook he and deputy Scott created available to any department.
