(5 Aug 2015) The Norwegian Labor Party Youth wing (AUF) camp on Utoya island prepares to reopen this week, for the first time since the murder of 69 people by far-right gunman Anders Breivik on the island.
On Thursday, more than 1,000 teenagers are expected to arrive on the island for a three-day trip to engage in political debate and social activities.
The purpose of the island camp has not changed from the fateful day four years ago when Breivik made his way onto the island dressed as a policeman and opened fire, killing 69 people, mostly young, and injuring 110 more.
According to the AUF, the reopening of the island represents an attempt to carry forward the legacy of the movement and the values that Breivik, a far-right extremist, sought to destroy on 22 July 2011.
However, the rehabilitation of the island has been a smoother process for some families than others.
A dialogue took place between the AUF and the victims' families to find a balance between the past and the future when reopening the camp.
A short distance away from the camp, a clearing reveals a small memorial providing a private place to grieve for those who lost someone in the attack.
Peaceful and understated, the memorial is inscribed with the names of those who lost their lives that day, but leaves empty spaces for the families of victims who could not bring themselves to be a part of the dialogue process.
"It's still too early for some (parents) now, and that's a natural thing, I think. Because we grieve in different ways and some parents need more time," says Lisbeth Royneland, a leader of the July 22 Support Group Leader and mother of Synne, her 18 year-old daughter who was among the dead on Utoya island.
For most teenagers arriving on Thursday it will be their first visit to Utoya, but in a country where one survey showed one-in-four people knew somebody affected by attack, their arrival could also create strong emotions nationwide.
