Cheerleading wasn’t always seen as a women’s sport. From the 1800s through the early 1900s, it was considered an elite activity for men—especially at Ivy League schools. In fact, being a “valiant cheerleader” was once viewed as nearly as prestigious as being a star quarterback.

That changed during World War II, when women stepped into the role while men were away at war—sparking some friction once soldiers returned. And believe it or not, some of America’s most notable political figures, including Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, once wore the title of cheerleader.
