Passing Drills Part 2, Watkins Glen 08/04/24, GVC BMWCCA Civic Si, HPDE

GVC BMWCCA event at Watkins Glen 8/3+8/4. My 2019 Si, I am in group 2 this session solo, practicing passing drills with another group 2 driver that is also solo. I was paired with Ted ‪@L8AP3X‬ in his civic to practice passing drills. for this club a point-by is required to pass, that goes for all drivers in all group levels.

This was session 3 of 4 on Sunday, I was solo'd for this session. all weekend myself and the other student in this video (red civic) were playing leap frog which is passing each other on every straight where passing is allowed, it could be early in the straight or late where the pass would go into the corner or turn. These drills turned out to be super fun and helped immensely with becoming comfortable with being close to another car in different passing scenarios.

We were precticing this drill with each other while navigating the track with a out 20 other cars. the goal wasn't to get around the track the fastest but to continuously pass one another. This skill isn't as easy as you may think and although it doesn't look like we are close, when coming into turn 1 at over 100 mph it feels like we are on each other's bumpers. since this was my first solo run our instructor told us to keep 2x further away from each other than the previous sessions so we were keeping a bigger gap than we have been all weekend.

The Si did great this weekend, all of the modifications I made to braking and handling since last year really worked out great, I was still getting used to the Carbotech brake pads as they work insanely well. The kumho V730 tires held up great all weekend, even in the 1 session where it was down pouring rain Saturday.
