ENERGY SUPPORT FOR DOMESTIC FOOD PRODUCTION MATTERS

Recent fresh food shortages have shown how vital it is that we sufficiently invest in our agricultural sector is to ensure the strength, stability, and sustainability of our domestic food production.

Farmers have been excluded from UK Government’s definition of energy and trade intensive industries, leaving farmers struggling with substantial energy costs.

Farmers in Scotland and across the UK now face cutting the growth of crops which are energy intensive such as tomatoes as production costs soar.

Meanwhile European farmers have received a €500m support packaged to help with rising production costs.

This is fundamentally a question of food security with consumers exposed to fresh produce shortages and higher costs. Domestic food production matters and farmers need the same level of support as energy intensive sectors.
