Innovation in southern Ontario is driven by companies like The Growcer Inc., backed by NCFDC’s thriveFORWARD initiative.

After experiencing high food prices during a trip to Northern Canada, Alida Burke and Corey Ellis decided to make a socio-economic impact through innovation. Their desire for change led them to found ‪@Growcer‬, a company dedicated to empowering communities across Canada to grow food locally and sustainably.

Manufacturing and selling modular vertical hydroponic farms, Growcer’s state-of-the-art, turn-key system allows farmers (as well as aspiring farmers) to grow their own produce with ease, local and year-round, no matter the weather or climate conditions. To date, the Growcer team has launched 85 projects within Canada, generating 10 million servings of herbs, greens and vegetables—and counting!

Located in Ottawa, Ontario, Growcer was a recipient of matching thriveFORWARD funding, investing in innovation, jobs and growth. The funding enabled the advancement of Growcer’s Indigenous customer relationships (half of their current customers are from Indigenous communities) which strengthened the company's commitments and prepared them to apply to the Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) certification from the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Businesss™.
