Media tycoon Vladimir Gusinsky, whose arrest and imprisonment sparked harsh criticism that the Kremlin was cracking down on the free press, was released from jail on Friday evening.

Gusinsky, the head of the Media-Most holding company that includes some of Russia's most respected broadcast and print media, was arrested on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the prosecutor-general's office said Gusinsky was released upon his written pledge that he would not leave the country and said the charges against him of swindling and theft remained.

Russian Media magnate, Vladimir Gusinsky, returned to the Media Most headquarters in Moscow, after being released from one of the city's most notorious jails.

The multimillionaire was arrested on Tuesday and later charged with swindling and theft.

Some in Russia believe the arrest was part of a media crackdown in Russia against companies that offer coverage critical of the government.

A spokesman for the prosecutor-general's office said Gusinsky was released upon his written pledge that he would not leave the country and said the charges against him of swindling and theft remained.

Prosecutors have said Gusinsky is suspected of taking part in the theft of 10 (m) million dollars in state funds in a privatisation deal.
