Taking place one year after the events of the first game, Sho Hayate had won the tournament while defeating both King Leo and his fake impersonator King Lion.
To seek revenge against Hayate and those who had caused his humiliating downfall, King Leo has organized a second version of the Battle of the Beast God tournament, but this time there's a new rule: teams of two people must work together so that they can either ensure victory or face defeat.
With the exception of Carol Stanzack (who decides to skip the tournament in order to continue her gymnastics training) and Nicola Zaza (who's too busy in having to work on his latest scientific project), the competitors from last year's tournament have decided to join forces with each other via their own respective tag teams on either friendly or temporary terms while two new challengers enter the fray for their own personal reasons.
The gathered fighters must now be ready and prepared to not only fight and battle against one another and King Leo from within this tournament, but also, they must deal with an unknown yet dangerous threat that lies directly from within the shadows of this competition as well.
At the start of each match, the player selects two characters. Only one character is active at a time, and switching is possible only when the active fighter stands inside their team’s designated tag zone at the far left or right edge of the stage. A round ends immediately if either character on a team is knocked out, regardless of the partner’s remaining health.
The game uses a four-button control layout. Two buttons are assigned to weak and strong attacks, one button is used for a dedicated tag command, and one for a dedicated dodge or roll maneuver. The dodge mechanic allows the player to quickly evade attacks and reposition, similar to the system found in The King of Fighters series. Movement is fast, with short hops, jumps, and forward or backward dashes available.
Combat focuses on close-quarters fighting with chainable normal attacks, special moves, and command inputs. The tag mechanic can be used offensively by calling in the partner during safe situations to extend combos or apply pressure, or defensively to switch to a character with more health. Because tagging can only be performed within the tag zone, controlling space and forcing the opponent away from their zone becomes an important part of strategy.
The roster consists of characters from Savage Reign, including Sho Hayate, Gordon Bowman, Chung Paifu, King Lion, Gozu, Mezu, and Max Eagle, along with new characters Rosa and Kim Sue Il. Boss characters include Jyazu and, in some versions, King Leo. Each fighter has a distinct moveset with unique special attacks and super techniques.
Stages are single-plane 2D arenas with visible tag zones at each end. When a character is not active, they appear in the background within the tag zone, visually ready to re-enter the fight. Matches are fought in best-of-two-round format, with standard time and health rules. The game supports both single-player arcade progression through a ladder of CPU opponents and two-player competitive play.
