The painting shows two boys carrying a wounded angel through a barren landscape. The younger one is dressed as if for a funeral, while the older one looks at us with an almost accusatory gaze. The angel is fragile, bandaged and holding snowdrops in her hands, flowers that represent healing and rebirth.

Simberg refused to explain what it meant, and for more than a century people have tried to solve its mystery. One possible interpretation is that the angel represents the fragile state of innocence and faith in a world marked by suffering. The children, too young to carry such a burden, could symbolize how we are often forced to confront pain before we are ready. The angel cannot walk on her own, yet the snowdrops suggest that even in moments of despair there is a possibility of renewal.

Perhaps the painting is a reminder that the divine and the vulnerable coexist, and that hope often survives in the most fragile of forms. But what do you think it means?
