Описание к видео The Call of the Wild by Jack London: A Discussion

'The Call of the Wild' by Jack London is an eminent work of animal fiction set in the late 19th century Klondike Gold Rush which saw the migration of about 100,000 people to the region of Yukon in north-western Canada. In 1896, gold was discovered there by a group of local miners and this incident brought forth people from San Francisco and Seattle with the dream of getting large amounts of the yellow metal. These Gold Prospectors were required to have sufficient money, food, clothing and equipment necessary to survive the intense cold in the Klondike region. They needed strong, thick-furred, muscular dogs to carry these provisions from one place to another and also to deliver mails to the nearby towns.
The novel centers around a St Bernard dog Buck who was abducted and taken away to pull sledges in the snow. He was constantly beaten up with other dogs for the sake of man's greed for gold. Buck finally is liberated when he howls along with other wolves and answers the call of the wild.
There are many slave narratives in the world, all of which revolve around humans but there are a very few writers like Jack London, who have studied animal behaviour and attributed to them human qualities. There are various groups today who fight against the cruelty to animals but there are a very few writers who present the inhuman torture by humans on animals in such a vivid manner.
