Groundwork: Rewriting Portsmouth’s History Through Inclusive Storytelling

Groundwork is a powerful new project that’s putting people with a learning disability at the heart of Portsmouth’s cultural narrative. For too long, their stories have been left out of history — but that ends now.

Co-designed by This New Ground’s Inclusive Arts Committee, this trailblazing initiative is capturing the oral histories of 50 people with a learning disability, creating the city’s first-ever dedicated archive of their voices. Groundwork uses storytelling, creativity, and community-led arts to connect people with their heritage, challenge outdated perceptions, and build a more inclusive future.

This short film shares the early stages of our journey — from interviews and workshops to creative collaborations that will culminate in Portsmouth’s first learning disability-led exhibition and festival in 2026.
