Female salmon dig their nests with their tales - which are often rubbed to the bone. They select the proper sized substrate in an area where the water is well oxygenated, has adequate depth, and upwelling occurs. This upwelling generally provides cooler water during the summer months and warmer water in the winter months.

Once the eggs are deposited, she'll move upstream a little and go through the same routine in order to cover the eggs so that they'll be protected over the course of the fall and winter while the embryos are developing.

Sound travels very well in water, and you can hear the gravels moving in this video as she builds her redd - as well as from those being built by other nearby salmon.
