   • Iceland: IMO Volcano Eruption Update 16/9/...

Risk assessment unchanged but will be reassessed after a week.
Landrise and magma accumulation under Svartsengi continues.
About 8-9 million cubic meters of magma have accumulated under Svartsengi since the last eruption.
The likelihood of a new event increases as around 11 million cubic meters have accumulated by the end of September. However, considerable uncertainty remains.
The risk assessment card remains unchanged but will be reviewed next week.
Landrise and magma accumulation
Measurements show that magma accumulation under Svartsengi continues at a similar rate as recently. Model results estimate that about 8-9 million cubic meters of magma have accumulated since the last eruption, which began on July 16. The amount that flowed from the magma accumulation area in that eruption was estimated at about 12 million cubic meters.

Likely a new eruption

Based on previous events in the Sundhnúk crater series, the likelihood of a new magma flow and eruption increases when the same amount of magma has accumulated under Svartsengi as erupted in the last event. If the accumulation rate remains unchanged, this amount will be reached in the second half of this month, as stated in the last update of the hazard assessment map. However, experience shows that the threshold for when an event begins varies between eruptions. In some cases, an eruption has started with a smaller amount, in other cases a larger amount has been required. Therefore, it is assumed that an eruption can begin at any time, even if the magma accumulation is still below 12 million cubic meters.

Risk assessment

The hazard assessment map will remain unchanged this time, but given that the same amount of magma as was released in the last eruption will be reached by the end of September, the hazard assessment map will be revised next week. It is therefore valid from September 16 to September 23.

Some of the images are produced by recent advances in Artificial Intelligence. They are just pretty pictures that AI is producing when a text describes a volcanic event or geological phenomenon for them. They are by no means represent the reality and are used here only for their graphical merits.
