Camassia leichtlinii, known as Great Camas or Large Camas, is a great plant for pollinators, particularly bees, producing in mid-spring an abundance of star-shaped flowers lasting several days. It is a species of bulbous plant native to Western North America, from British Columbia (Canada) to California (USA). It is quite tall, up to 120 cm (4 ft) tall, therefore ideal for the back border of the garden. The leaves are long and narrow, green, and the most common form in the market, the subspecies called Camassia leichtlinii ssp. suksdorfii , produces a very tall flower spike of star-shaped blue flowers, however this subspecies has also a white form and a double-flowered form available on the market. A bit more difficult to find is Camassia leichtlinii ssp. leichtlinii, with creamy-yellow flowers. Camassia leichtlinii, like its relative Camassia quamash (the Quamash), was used as food by Native American tribes, who used to harvest and eat them after cooking. Camassia leichtlinii bulbs need to be planted in autumn in well drained, moist soil, and it is important that the soil stays moist for the period of active growth of the plant, between late winter and early summer; the leaves will then die down and the plant will go dormant in summer. I found that this plant really thrives in partial shade, but can take full sun as long as the soil is kept moist. It is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8 so it can be grown outdoors throughut the UK as well as in many countries with temperate and cold climate.
