The role of the computational biology team is evolving.

Today, the team is typically made up of individuals with various skill sets and different disease backgrounds. Usually there are not people with software engineering skills within the team, not are there biologists or clinicians. In this model, individuals are assigned to a specific project and provide the analytical perspective to assist the biologists.

The drawback of this model is that it relies on the skills of one individual, which makes it challenging to standardize analysis. In addition, code is generally written for one analysis and cannot be reused.

However, this role is changing, and the computational biology team is often expected to come up with a hypotheses and mechanisms of action around diseases and provide targets for the company to follow.
