To err is to be human. And to acknowledge one's mistakes is a sign of maturity and wisdom.

With that in mind, what follows are a handful of America's most regrettable decisions made between its founding and the present day. Most of them caused needless pain, and sullied our reputation as land of the free and home of the brave.

I truly believe though that what matters more than a person's missteps is that they are able to learn from them, and thereby change for the better. And that too I have the happiness of unequivocally declaring America to have in most cases done.
