Reading co-presented by the Evergreen Review and Singapore Unbound
Featuring Jerrine Tan, Paula Mendoza, Devi S. Laskar, Celina Su, and Pauline Park
Saturday, May 1, 2021, 7.30-8.30 pm ET

On the first day of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, five Asian women writers read from their work and address the rise of anti-Asian bigotry in the United States. Coming from a variety of perspectives and backgrounds, Jerrine Tan, Paula Mendoza, Celina Su, Devi S. Laskar, and Pauline Park together throw a powerful light on the past and present of American racial capitalism, patriarchy, and imperialism. They draw from intimate personal experience and strong political convictions to propose an intersectional and international feminism as the way forward.

Jerrine Tan (@jerrinetanew) currently teaches Global Anglophone Literature in the English department at Mount Holyoke College. She was born in Singapore and has a PhD in English from Brown University. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Asian American Writers Workshop, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Literary Hub, Modern Fiction Studies, and elsewhere.

Paula Mendoza's work has appeared in Hayden's Ferry Review, Dreginald, Bennington Review, and elsewhere. Her first book, Play for Time, was selected by Vijay Seshadri for the Gaudy Boy Poetry Book Prize and published in the spring of 2020. She's a PhD candidate at the University of Utah, and lives and writes in Salt Lake City. (@paulajanemendoza)

Celina Su’s writing includes the poetry collection Landia (published by Belladonna*), two poetry chapbooks, three books on social policy and civil society, and pieces in the New York Times Magazine, n+1, and Harper’s. Su is the Marilyn J. Gittell Chair in Urban Studies at the City University of New York. (celinasu.net/)

Devi S. Laskar (devislaskar.com/) is the author of The Atlas of Reds and Blues, winner of 7th annual Crook’s Corner Book Prize (2020) for best debut novel set in the South, winner of the 2020 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature; and among other awards, selected by The Georgia Center for the Book as a 2019 book “All Georgians Should Read.” The novel was named by The Washington Post as one of the 50 best books of 2019. A native of North Carolina, she now lives in California with her family.

Pauline Park (paulinepark.com) is chair of the New York Association for Gender Rights Advocacy (NYAGRA), the transgender advocacy organization that she co-founded in 1998, and president of the board of directors of Queens Pride House, the LGBT community center of the borough of Queens, which she co-founded in 1997; she led the campaign for the transgender rights law enacted by the New York City Council in 2002 and in 2005 became the first openly transgendered grand marshal of the New York City LGBT Pride March.
