When Final Fantasy VII came out, the RPGs finally went mainstream.
The crowd sold their old console for a Playstation, and anyone who could make a video game jumped into the El Dorado of this before genre niche, exploiting to the maximum the low production cost of the CD.

SquareSoft gamble with Mystic Quest didn't pay off, and the western public couldn't be less concerned with this type of game that seem less attractive that something that explode and far less accessible.

But when Final Fantasy 6 (or 3 like it was called in America) was release to the west, it became rapidly the subject of a lot of discussion.
After all, the graphics were stunning for the time, whoever you were an RPG nerd or not, and people were curious about the notorious game length. One thing was sure for everyone: THIS GAME WAS BIG.
Back then, it's safe to say that Final Fantasy 6 was the today equivalent of Skyrim.

Unfortunately, this still wasn't enough and the game didn't manage to reach the sale expectation of Squaresoft in the west, why it was heavily sought by collectors for a long time.
But the legacy of the game is still glowing strong even in these days. And Final Fantasy 6 definitely paved the way for the next Era of Rpgs to come, showing to the world that RPGs were the genre to go if you're looking for innovation.
